Environmental responsibility

We work to ensure we meet all our own environmental responsibilities whilst working closely with our customers to help them achieve theirs.

Plastic is a force for good

We produce plastic packaging where plastic is the most sustainable material available and provides unbeatable technical performance. No material has a better carbon footprint than plastic, provided it is recycled and reused effectively.

When we manufacture high volume packaging, our solutions help create more sustainable products and minimise the environmental footprint. In our applications, using plastic (instead of alternative materials) reduces overall fuel usage, improves fuel efficiency, reduces water use and minimises food waste.

An independent study by the Carbon Trust to assess the carbon footprint of Flexipol 25kg polythene sacks against equivalent paper bag has proved that the carbon dioxide emissions of the polythene sack were 36% lower than the paper equivalent. Read more.

We see waste as opportunity

We see waste as the key opportunity for improvement. In our effort to support the vision for a circular economy for plastics, we focus our efforts on three areas of waste management.

Waste not, want not

We are committed to increasing the recycling of our internal waste. Internal plastic scrap represents about 10% of our plastic usage. Our goal is to increase the recycling of this scrap from less than 1% of plastic used to 7.5% of total plastic used, by 2021. The remaining 2.5% is likely to go to recycling or synthetic fuel as we cannot currently re-use it.

Material Development

Flexipol is committed to providing the best performing, most sustainable products to answer our customers’ needs. We continually research and assess alternative materials to ensure our engineered solutions offer the best performance possible using the most suitable materials.

Flexipol is committed to exploring and developing:

  • Lighter/thinner but stronger materials
  • Re-usable and recycled materials
  • End-of-life waste solutions
  • Partnerships with research establishments to develop new materials
Sustainable innovation

Customer assistance

Where possible, we facilitate improved recycling by our customers, value engineering their packaging, and advising them about more sustainable alternatives; thinner and stronger materials being the most obvious opportunity at present.

  • We partner with customers to understand what sustainability criteria matter most
  • We develop and supply a film solution that matches our customers’ priorities
  • Our research focuses on increasing recycled content and using less overall materials
